International festival "Magic of Straw"

Vilnius Ethnic Culture Centre invites You to the international festival “Magic of Straw”, which is going to be held from 22nd to 28th of July 2019. We are waiting for all those who are interested in mysterious and authentic hand-made good of folklore art – straw garden. During the festival the handicraftsmen will teach the participants to bind traditional straw gardens in various ways and to make many different elements of straw gardens: birds, suns, angels, etc. These objects could be interpreted as separate handicrafts. The participants of the festival will be able to present their own works of straw at the exhibition of straw gardens and straw crafts.
We are also looking for craftsmen from Lithuania and foreign countries to attend the festival. If you can teach how to bind various items from straw, you are very welcome to join “Magic of Straw” and give a workshop. This event aims to present the diversity, multiple meanings, different interpretations of straw gardens.
The preliminary programme of the festival:
• Straw art workshops led by artisans from Lithuania and foreign countries;
• Guided tour to the museum of Zanavykai, special presentation about bread – from rye to our table;
• Excursion around Vilnius and trip to the largest ethnographic open-air museums in Europe;
• Opportunity to attend the ceremony of redemption of wedding straw garden by folklore ensemble “Kupkėmis“ from Kupiškis Culture Centre.
• Traditional Lithuanian dances and games workshop by Vilnius university folklore ensemble “Ratilio“;
• The performance of open-air work – the ending of harvest time by Sintautai Culture Centre ensemble “Santaka”;
• The presentation of Lithuanian culinary heritage and dishes from rye in the restaurant “Kuchmistrai”;
• The view of documentary films “Gardens of Heaven” (director A. Tarvydas), „The Realm of Gardens in The House of Juškai“ (director A. Liorančas) and “The Customs of Harvest Time: Guest, “Jievaras”, Wreath” (directors R. Balkutė ir N. Laurinkienė);
• The lectures by researchers of straw gardens J. Vaiškūnas, V. Tumėnas, R. Balsys.
“Magic of Straw” will continue the work of Vilnius Ethnic Culture Centre in the field of preservation of straw gardens – the Centre has already published books about straw gardens, created documentary film “Gardens of Heaven”, organized international conference “Researches and Dispersion of Gardens” and arranged various exhibitions in National Museum of Lithuania, Government of Republic of Lithuania, Lithuanian National Radio and Television, the bookstore “Pegasas”.
